Virtual exhibition tour with Megan Hoetger. Sands Murray-Wassink, In Good Company (Horsepower): Materials from the Gift Science Archive, 1993-present, mistral, Amsterdam, March - May 2021.

In Good Company (Horsepower): Materials from the ‘Gift Science Archive’, 1993–present was a two-month performative installation, which opened up painter and body artist Sands Murray-Wassink’s ‘monumental’ 18-month collaborative performance Gift Science Archive to the public for haptic engagements with the artist’s working and archiving processes. Alongside archive boxes, work table, and computer with the online database, the exhibition shared for the first time bodies of work and stacks of ephemera—including objects, documents, print materials, performance relics and more—dating back to 1993 when the artist began to develop his studio practice.

Visitors to In Good Company became researchers, invited to sit for hour-long visits amongst materials from the archive, to peruse the online database, and to pull materials from the collection for a closer look. The exhibition curators (Megan Hoetger, Radna Rumping, Huib Haye van der Werf), in turn, became archive managers hosting the research visits and on hand to share a story over a cup of tea. In this performance of ‘archive work,’ the research experience was set into relational motion by conversations – a central part of Murray-Wassink’s practice.

Murray Wassink’s exhibition formed part of the commission Gift Science Archive, which Hoetger led as part of the Edition VIII - Ritual and Display biennial program (2019-2021) for If I Can’t Dance, Amsterdam. The project was co-produced with mistral, Amsterdam and Auto Italia, London with support from the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam. In Good Company was on view at mistral, Amsterdam 6 March - 9 May 2021, and was co-curated by Hoetger together with mistral co-directors Radna Rumping and Huib Haye van der Werf.
