Conceived as a multi-channel video installation, The Actress is premised on the scenario of an actress and director meeting for the rehearsal of a monologue about what it means to embody an “I”. Shot in Buenos Aires, AR and Amsterdam, NL and traversing the shared disciplinary edges of theatre, film, and the visual arts, the project centres acts of translation – of one language into another, of a language into a body, of a theatre rehearsal into a performance video.

Following the exhibition at the Grazer Kunstverein in Fall 2021, The Actress then became the online studio project The Actress(es), which presented remnants and reflections from the film production process, offering a look inside the artists’ open research questions regarding translation.

The Actress was co-produced by the Grazer Kunstverein; steirischer herbst ‘21, Graz; and If I Can’t Dance, Amsterdam. As curatorial and production advisor on the project, Hoetger worked with the artists on the Amsterdam film shoot as well as the online studio presentation following the installation. The project was supported by Mondriaan Fonds and Stichting Dommering Fond with special thanks to the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten and Teatro el Espiòn.
