A three-part performance-lecture series in which Zone Collective invited members of the public to join them in “collective annotation” sessions intended to open up the materials in the research installation Shadow Zones: Experimental Cinema History in Yugoslavia; or, a Cinema and a History Made and Unmade by Maps. Seeking to move toward an understanding of research as an ongoing set of relational encounters, the sessions dialogically engaged archival materials from the installation, staging them as the materials for moving images on the wall. Discussed topics included the Genre Experimental Film Festival and the Multimedia Center Student Center Zagreb, as well as conceptual and political discussions on models of film distribution. The double action of note-taking and moving image making enacted the multiplicity of ways (hi)stories can be represented.
Sessions were held on:
26 September 2021
3 October 2021
10 October 2021
Zone Collective is a collaborative research platform established in 2016 by independent cultural practitioner Kirila Cvetkovska and historian-curator Megan Hoetger as a space to intercede into historiographic conventions for understanding cultural production in geopolitical sites marked by their grey zone ‘border status(es).’
Drawing the Archive was staged over three consecutive weekends between September and October 2021 as part of the public program accompanying the research installation Shadow Zones: Experimental Cinema History in Yugoslavia; or, a Cinema and a History Made and Unmade by Maps, which was on view at When Site Lost the Plot, Amsterdam 15 July - 16 October 2021.
